Is access to latent functions necesseary for mental health? = seams like it; there is such correlation

STUDY
Aim=
-
-
1) to test whether employed have better access to latent functions relative to unemployed and people out of the labor force
Method: strata-sampling (multi-level quota sampling) - people are divided into groups based on their characteristics (SE status, gender, occupation, household size, region, size of the town) in a way that is representative of the geographic region
Since the method does not necessarily give representative sample, weights are applied for each person
Measures : latent/manifest function, well-being/distress, employment status, demographics.

Change in work ethic in America = traditional work ethicbeing replaced by leisure ethic; slowly but steadily

STUDY = Update of the findings of Vecchio (1980) and check of the longitudinal changes (Vecchio researched the lottery question)
variables checked: sex, attitudes, demographics
Methods:survey in a quota sampling scheme = allows for generalization of findings in the given population
-
Measured: job satisfaction, life satisfaction, occupational prestige, general happiness, demographics, socio-economic status
RESULTS
-
-
Women vs Men
Women are more likely to quit their job following a lottery win by 0.1 SD (super small difference but still)
-
Over the years there have been a decline in answers to the question whether you would work after winning a lottery

AIM: examination of long-term adaptation by hanges in life satisfaction before, during and after experience of unemployment
-
hedonic treadmill; gains and setbacks are inevitably followed by adaptation back to baseline (this is how the hypothesis is called in some literature)
METHOD: 24k Germans, 5.2k unemployed. 3.7k became unemployed while taking part in the study
preliminary analyses show effect of historical bias (fall of Berlin wall f.e.) = decrease in satisfaction before the fall, and huge burst after it happened and then it started to gradually decline
RESULTS:
-
people with high baseline reacted bit worse to unemployment than those with lower baseline. ut effect was small. Also they were less likely to adopt back to the baseline. The bigger the drop the less likely adaptation would take place back at the baseline
Selenko
Unemployment has serious negative effect on psychological health ; study was conducted to check the mechanisms
Unemployed = more vulnerable to substance abuse (alcoholism) and depression. Also lower life satisfaction and life expectancies
-
latent benefits; can be regarded as separate or as one construct. both conceptions got empirical support.

4) Deprivation of LB more likely proceeds psychological distress rather than the opposite (checked with longitudinal study)
Confirmed = especially for social contact, time structure, financial benefits
-
variables: well-being, access to LAMB, employment status
- Why do we work? effect of conservatism vs liberalism. WHat is the effect of social norms and culture? Inclusive orgnisation and disabled people.
