The language of computers
Binary Logic
George Boole (1815-1864) developed - lead to "Boolean" logic
Switches - 1=true, 0=false, on or off can build to represent a binary number
Each digit is a 'bit'
increase bits by 1 and total number doubles
8 bits = 1 byte or 2^8 = 256 numbers
Base 10 - Decimal numbers
e.g. 10 000 is 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 is 10^4
Table to convert binary to decimal
"There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't" (Anon)
Measuring Data
Storage
refers to MB and KB which equal 1024 bytes
and 1 048 576 bytes 2^10 & 2^20
Data Transmission
is using 1 000 and 1 000 000 for kilo and mega but in bits not bytes. So Broadspeed of 28Mbps (Mega bits per second)
