Introduction:
A concept supported and exemplified in Willy Russell's play, Educating Rita, which explores intellectual and emotional change as a result of transitioning into different societies through the medium of education.
Additionally, Allan Baile's short story, Only Ten, which characterises a young refugee longs for belonging in Australian society and has to overcome past experiences to achieve this.
Thesis: New stages of life can and will bring about growth and change in ones life. As one experiences new phases of their life, change is an implicit part of moving into the world.

Educating Rita

Supporting - Relational hardship: Russell portrays the hardship that Rita encounters with her family, particularly Denny as a founding factor to which prevents her from transitional success. Rita's husband, Denny, does not enjoy the fact the Rita is learning and conforming towards a new society.
Analysis: Russell likens the event when Denny burnt all her educational books to when the nazis burnt the books to which contain adversary information to their campaign. This historical allusion symbolises the profound challenges Rita faces as she has to decide whether her love for education and upward mobility will surpass her love for her husband. Eventually, resulting in Rita sacrificing her relationship with Denny, a concept that Russell places great emphasis on as where there is growth there is also sacrifice and loss.
Topic - Challenges: The transition process will be challenging to individuals as they encounter obstacles in which prevent them from growing and changing.
Only Ten
Analysis: Baille symbolises Hussein T-shirt to represent his past experiences in war torn environments. Hussein's past bears down on him profoundly, preventing him from successful moving into another world. However, Hussein eventually takes his shirt off which symbolises his ability to move forward and overcome his post traumatic stress disorder.
Link: Therefore, the process of transitioning will test an individuals desires to change. Composers portray personal and relational hardship to depict the challenging nature of transitions.

Supporting: In contrast, Baille highlights Hussein's inner challenges that he faces as a result of his new experiences in Australian school life.
