Rich/ Assessment Task:
Unfortunately, it can be easy for students to grow up in a society that doesn't allow the understanding of the country that the students grew up in. It is important for students to gather a complete, inexplicit understanding of the hardships Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islander residents faced in the past. The role of this assessment task is to allow students to gather an understanding of the importance of recognising the horrid past Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Islander residents faced.
While using the supplementary text of 'Njunjul the Sun' by Meme McDonald and Boori Monty Pryor, students will write a newspaper article, complete with pictures and resources, detailing either the Freedom Rides or The Mabo Case. Students would be encouraged to make the Newspaper article as interesting and engaging as possible, whether it be by creating a fake newspaper to correspond with the article, or even turning the newspaper into a video news report if the students wanted to. This will, in turn, allow students to gather a full understanding towards the rough history that faced Indigenous Australians, and furthermore, allows students to gather a complete understanding towards the importance of acknowledging NAIDOC Week.
