PRINCE2 & Leadership (Where does a P2 project need leadership?…
PRINCE2 & Leadership
Assertion: Well managed projects are a necessary condition for project success, but project leadership is a sufficient condition
Evidence of necessity for project leadership
P2 Practitioner needs to accept P2 doesn't cover leadership but needs to understand where the leadership holes are and think how to fill them, else project likely to fail
Benefits of leadership. Motivated and so more productive teams, good decision making, overcome resistance to change, unified direction, influencing others, taking responsibility for the project's success/ failure and issues, creating a compelling, inspiring vision for the project which unifies and motivates, resolving conflicts, communication, role model
IBC where no one wanted to lead versus BBC where someone did
People can develop their leadership capabilities - great leaders may be born but we all can get better at it
Defining Leadership
Management is planning and control, doing things right, science, head, thinking, IQ, left brain, results, gears, Gantt chart, process, resource planning, done within an established structure and direction, relies more on established positional power
Definitions of leadership. Getting results through influencing others. Leadership is when people follow. Focuses more on people and relationships, doing the right thing, creating structure and direction, leads change, earns power through credibility, trust, and character
Components of leadership - competency model from well known publisher. Vision, role modelling, managing talent, managing change, decision making
HBR survey on most important leadership competencies: clearly communicates expectations, allows self organization, provides a feeling of connection and belonging - communicates openly and often, creates and feeling of succeeding and failing together
Taking accountability and responsibility for results
Different styles of leadership, Theory X,Y and Z. Situational leadership. Servant leadership. P2 book mentions autocratic and consensual
Challenges applying leadership in a PRINCE2 project
When a project manager is really given the role of project support
Steering committees rather than project boards
Project board members/PM without leadership capabilities, P2 p74 mentions training - could include leadership training
Leadership within programmes and agile
Where does leadership lie within P2?
Which role should lead?
Project board. P2 manual states (APP C) that board members should have leadership capabilities, they (in particular the executive) are singly accountable for the project. They set the direction of the project
Executive. Singly accountable for the project, ultimate decision maker, responsible for aligning project to org strategy and biz case,
PM. P2 Manual (p343) responsible for leading and motivating the team. Competencies should have people management, communication, conflict management. P66 Diagram says role should include team work and line management
My opinion - both the executive and the PM are the prime leaders, but all roles have a part to play. Eg senior supplier taking responsibility for resolving resourcing issues
P2 states it does not cover how to lead a project. Says impossible to codify leadership and also that there are too many styles from autocratic, to consensus based. Dubious reason. Probably correct tough as leadership different in nature and would make book too long
Where does a P2 project need leadership?
Creating a project vision. Why a PID is not a vision. Benefits of a vision, How to create a vision
Creating strong productive teams. P2 book mentions Belbin tool. There are others, Myers Briggs and Colour code
Decision making - particularly at the project board authorization points. Decision making models might be useful
Leading and dealing with resistance to change. Projects fail due to resistance. Kanter 10 areas. Overview of change management, how to develop this area
PM needs to influence teams that they are often not line manager. How is this done. Creating leadership identity. French and Ravens forms of influence
Avoids micro-management. P2 sometimes perceived as overly controlling. HBR competency is to allow people to self organize within loose directions. Pink research shows autonomy driver for motivation
Motivating teams. Wh
Decision making
