Chemical Compound in Cells
Elements and Compundes
When two or more elements are chemically they form a compound
Some important groups of organic compounds found in living things are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids
An element is any substance that cannot be broken down further into other things
Proteins
There are 20 common amino acids, cells combined them in different ways to form thousands of proteins
An enzyme is a type of protein that speed up a chemical reaction
Protiens are large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, mitrogen, and sometimes sulfur
Lipids
The cell membrane is mostly made of oils and fats
Lipids are cells that store fats
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates have high sugar content
Carbohydrates can be found in cell walls
They are made of energy - rich compounds of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
Nucleic Acids
There are two types of Nucleic acids
Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA is the genetic material that carries information about the organism
Ribonuliec acids or RNA, plays an important role in the production of protiens
Nucleic acids are very long organic molecules made of Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus
Water and Living Things
Most chemical reactions cannot take place without water
Water keeps cells their shape
Water makes up 2/3 of your body
