Some people (especially white, including myself) have never heard of Bayard Rustin, Audre Lorde, Kim Coco Iwamoto, or other LGBTQ+ PoC activists. However, most people know Harvey Milk, Alan Turing, and Ellen Degeneres.
Queer PoC are often not acknowledged for their accomplishments, but white LGBTQ+ people are praised for their bravery.
Many LGBTQ people of color are swept under the rug, while their white counterparts are recognized and awarded. This also causes many queer PoC to not see as much representation.
Bayard Rustin was MLK's advisor, a key organizer for the March on Washington, and was jailed for his own sexuality. Once he was out publicly, he continued to live openly and fight for black and gay rights.
Audre Lorde was a very educated teacher and poet who wrote often about gender, sexuality, and race. Her pieces have won multiple awards, and she is often described as "feminist, lesbian, poet, mother, warrior." Her blackboard in this image reads "women are powerful and dangerous."
Kim Coco Iwamoto is a Japanese-American Hawaiian trans woman. She has been on the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, was elected 2 terms onto the Hawaii Board of Education, and was even recognized by Barack Obama as a Champion of Change. Most recently, she ran for Lieutenant Governor.
Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S. when he won his campaign to the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco. This gave the LGBT community a representative.
Alan Turing was a mathematician and computer scientist who creating the "Turing Machine", which is described as
a "mathematical model of a hypothetical computing machine that can use a predefined set of rules to determine a result from a set of input variables." This was a huge discovery during WWII, but Alan was still prosecuted for his homosexuality.
Ellen Degeneres is a popular author, talkshow host, comedian, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She has also become well-known for her LGBT activism. She stands up to injustices, specifically that are aimed at LGBT youth, and has donated thousands of dollars to different youth and charities.
