Nora Rathblott- The Odyssey Books 15-17
Book 15- The Prince Returns
Athena goes to Sparta and tells Telemachus to go home. She also tells Telemachus that the suitors are waiting in ambush and she tells him to go to the swineherd when he arrives home.
Pisistratus and Telemachus leave and Menelaus and Helen give them gifts.
They see an eagle with a goose in its claws and Helen says it's a sign that Odysseus will ruin the suitors.
They travel back to where Nestor lives, but Odysseus does not stop and see him because he thinks he will make him stay.
Before Telemachus sails away a decedent of Melampus named Theoclymenus who is a prophet stops them and asks if he can sail with them and Telemachus says yes, and they sail home.
During this Odysseus tells Eumaeus that he will go beg for food and do jobs made for poor people, but Eumaeus says he will continue staying with them.
Odysseus and Eumaeus tell each other about their suffering. Eumaeus was born into a wealthy family but he was taken away by pirates and brought to Ithaca and sold as a slave, he tells about this experience.
Telemachus arrives home and the crew brings the ship to town, Theoclymenus is decided to stay with Piraeus, and Telemachus goes to the swineherd.
There is another message and Theoclymenus says it means that Telemachus's family is the most powerful.
Characters
Theoclymenus is a man who sails with Telemachus back to Ithaca, he is a prophet and decedent of Melampus.
Laertes is Odysseus's father who moved out of his house because he could not put up with the suitors.
Book 16- Father and Son
Telemachus goes to the swineherd, the swineherd is happy to see him and kisses his face and cries.
The swineherd tells Telemachus who the stranger is who Telemachus says he will bring food and clothes to.
Telemachus tells the swineherd to tell Penelope he is home and to send a girl to tell Laertes.
Athena visits and changes Odysseus into a younger man and she tells him to tell Telemachus who he is which he does but Telemachus does not believe him at first.
Telemachus tells Odysseus about the suitors so they can plot to ruin them. Odysseus says that Zeus and Athena will help.
Odysseus tells Telemachus to ignore when he is getting beaten and then hide the weapons in he house but leave some out for them to use.
The suitors that were waiting in ambush come home. They decide to wait for a sign from the gods to decide if they should kill Telemachus or not.
Penelope tells the suitors to stop and they lie and say they are not going to kill Telemachus.
Odysseus wants to know how many women slaves of his have hooked up with the suitors.
Book 17- Insults and Abuse
Telemachus goes to his house and Penelope cries when she sees him.
Telemachus tells his mother to get ready and pray.
Piraeus and Theoclymenus come to Telemachus's house and Telemachus tells Piraeus to keep the gifts until he kills the suitors.
Penelope asks about Odysseus and Telemachus tells her what Menelaus told him, that Odysseus is trapped by Calypso. But Theoclymenus says that Odysseus is actually already here or on his way.
Odysseus and Eumaeus go to town. On the way they run into Melanthius who was going to feed the suitors he was very rude to Odysseus and says he doesn't want to work for anything and just beg.
Eumaeus and Odysseus go to Odysseus's palace, Eumaeus goes inside as Odysseus waits outside. While he is outside Odysseus spots his old dog that he trained and then the dog died.
Telemachus gives the swineherd food to give to Odysseus. Odysseus goes inside to beg. Melanthius tells the suitors that Eumaeus brought Odysseus there and the suitors scold Eumaeus.
Telemachus tells Antinous to give Odysseus food but he doesn't want to and Odysseus thinks he is being selfish. Then Antinous throws a chair at Odysseus and they argue.
