Medical Health Policies

Asthma
Parents
-
Give permission for the school to administer any emergency treatment, including reliever medication.
Provide any required medication and equipment, such as reliever and preventer inhalers, and spacers.
School

Inform parents if their child has an asthma attack at school or if asthma is affecting the student at school.

Have plans in place for managing students with asthma on EOTC events, sports days, etc.

Call an ambulance immediately if a person shows severe symptoms of asthma, especially an inability to speak or move about and/or blueness around the mouth and fingertips.

Treatment

Give 6 separate puffs of medication, one at a time.
Use a spacer if available. If using a spacer, after each puff of medication, take 6 breaths from the spacer.

Repeat another separate 6 puffs of medication, one at a time.
If no improvement, use continuously until ambulance arrives.
Allergies
- We keep a record of students with allergies.
If a reaction occurs
Administer required allergy medication to the student, following the action plan. Record any medication given.
Call an ambulance immediately in the case of a severe reaction. An adult must stay with the student.

Medication

Medication for specific allergies or other health needs is stored in the locked cabinet in the medical space with a complete list of students' conditions. Staff are required to make themselves aware of this list.
Medicines
- The school will not administer medication to a student without formal parental consent. However, paracetamol may be given with verbal consent from a parent.

All medication is dispensed through the school office, and all treatments and the dispensing of medication is recorded
Parents/caregivers complete a Medicine Authority form, and notify the school in writing of any variation in dose.

Medication must be delivered to school by parents/caregivers, not by students

the record shows the name of the student, the dose given, the time and date given, any other action taken, and is signed by the student
