Good Literature reflects many aspects of culture- it's values, beliefs, ways of life, and patterns of thinking
Representation matters. It can help children see that in any argument, there are always two sides to consider- it helps with problem solving.
Exposing children to other ethnicities, cultures will help them understand them in a positive way, a positive outlook on life.
Selecting Multicultural Books
It has to have a positive portrayal of characters
It must include authentic and realistic behaviors
Cannot have stereotypes
Authentic illustrations
Pluralistic themes to foster beliefe in cultural diversity
Must have a high literary quality
Historical accuracy when appropriate
Reflection of the cultural values of the characters
Multicultural Lit has special effects for both students and teachers.
Minority students feel recognized and understood when their culture is acknowledged.

Students from the mainstream culture learn that there are other perspectives and ways of doing things that are just as valuable as their own.
