Components of an RPD
Reciprocators
-
Reciprocator opposes forces exerted by the clasp arm terminal during seating and unseating of the prosthesis
-
-
-
Normally, the reciprocal arm does not engage an undercut
-
Rest
Definition
(def.) A rigid extension of a fixed or removable partial denture which contacts a tooth or teeth to dissipate vertical or horizontal forces i.e. it support
-
Function
- Load transmission through the longitudinal axis of the tooth
-
-
- Can help modify the occlusion
-
- Maintain the position of a clasp (support and locate it)
- Prevent extrusion of unopposed abutment teeth by resting on the occlusal surface
- Provide positive reference seats in rebasing/ relining and/or impression procedures
Indirect Retainer
A part of an RPD which assists the direct retainers in preventing displacement of denture bases by functioning through lever action on the opposing side of the fulcrum line
-
It should be placed as far away as possible from the distal extension base in prepared rest seat on a tooth capable of supporting its function
Connectors
-
Major connectors
(def.) The part of a RPD that connects the components on one side of the arch to the components on the other side
-
-
Minor connectors
(def.) the connecting link between the major connector or the base of a RPD and other units of the prosthesis, such as clasps, indirect retainers and occlusa rests
