RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
-
EXPIRATION
[1] Inspiratory muscles relax (diaphragm rises; rib cage descends due to recoil of costal cartilages).
-
an active expiratory process that occurs when abdominal wall muscles contract and increase intra-abdominal pressure and depress the rib cage. These changes increase intrapulmonary pressure dramatically, so the pressure gradient is steeper and air moves more quickly and forcefully out of the lungs.
INSPIRATION
-
the larger the change in intrapulmonary volume, the lower the intrapulmonary pressure becomes. This creates a larger pressure gradient that pulls more air into the lungs.
The only way to get a bigger change in intrapulmonary volume is to use additional muscles, which are referred to collectively as the accessory respiratory muscles.
