Generation of X-rays
X-ray Spectrum
Characteristic Spectrum
When high potential difference of 100kV is applied across the cathode and anode, the the electrons are emitted with high kinetic energy and high speed.
-
Continuous Spectrum
When high potential difference is applied across the cathode and anode, the free electrons are accelerated. They acquire very high speed and kinetic energy before strike the metal target.
When they strike metal target, they decelerated and lose kinetic energy, radiating electromagnetic waves, whose wavelength are those of X-rays. The X-rays generated are called continuous X-rays.
