Cinematic Influences
<Structuralist Cinema>emphasizes how films convey meaning through the use of codes and conventions not dissimilar to the way languages are used to construct meaning in communication. However, structuralist film theory differs from linguistic theory in that its codifications include a more apparent temporal aspect.
An example of this is understanding how the simple combination of shots can create an additional idea.

Of course, there is a concrete three dimensional space, but it is filtered through perception.

Animated backdrops were stripped down to platforms and reconfigurable sets of stairs.
The focus was to place attention on the movement of the performers and adding depth to space by adding a Z space. These "living spaces" becomes three dimensional.
What is seen and heard is what exists.
Ludic Influences
Kentucky Route Zero does not value structures, physical or otherwise, without there being a human element embedded. Structures tend to impede this, existing for purely logical reasons that can displace the less fortunate because it’s cost-effective. Spaces lack spatial logic, the Zero is an abstract area, perhaps a metaphor for the afterlife. Ultimately, space serves to enhance the experience.

TITLE CARD: "The Poetics of Space" - "Outside and inside form a dialectic of division, the obvious geometry of which blinds us as soon as we bring it into metaphorical domains. It has the sharpness of the dialectics yes and no, which decides everything. Unless one is careful, it is made into a basis of images that govern all positive and negative." Gaston Bachelard. Architecture is treated as a spectacle, instead of part of the experience.
Games have always been in this eternal fight, a struggle to say whether they are art or science, when both concepts are artificially constructed and maintained, and artificially juxtaposed. A struggle between the concrete binary.
The binary is entirely removed; narratively. The concrete effect of choice is taken away, instead, the choice itself matters intrinsically.

XERYVELGARDE: It wouldn't surprise me that Dr. Truman doesn't know what he's doing, as the South has dipped low. Funding wouldn't be available for his education, or supplies; he forced to bow to a higher corporation, as his financial state is reliant solely on them.
What if this binary should be stripped away.
