Therapeutic or Empathetic Listening (Listening to understand feeling and emotion): empathy is a way of deeply connecting with another person
Encouraging the speaker to explain and elaborate on their feelings and emotions (e.g. used by counselors, therapists)

Prompting: these are all of the small silences, brief statements, smiles, nods, and grunts that prompt the person to keep talking

Other listening types: Appreciative listening (listening for enjoyment) and Rapport Listening (encourages the other person to trust and like us e.g. a salesman)

fully concentrating on what is being said rather than just passively hearing the message of the speaker
