Matter and Change Chapter 2
3 states of matter
Solid
is rigid
fixed shape/volume
cannot be squashed
Liquid
Particles: Can move out o place and around others (ability to flow/ pour
no fixed shape/volume
example:water
closely packed but not as much as a solid
not rigid
cannot be squashed
definite volume indefinite shape
Gas
example: helium
less dense than air
unreactive
not rigid
cannot be squashed
no fixed shape/volume
fill the whole space its in/ spread around
Mass
amount of matter an object contains
Reactant
starting substance in a chemical reaction
Describe Matter
Intensive
property that depends on the type of matter present, no the amount
Example: color/temperature/density/solubility/melting point/conductivity/boiling point/freezing point/taste/ shape
Extensive
property that depends on the AMOUNT of matter in the sample
Example: mass/volume/length/weight/size
Mixture
a physical blend of 2 or more components
Phase
part of a sample having uniform composition and properties
Product
a substance formed in a chemical reaction
Homogeneous
Composition that is uniform throughout the mixture
Example: all the same color/ consistent all the way through
Gas to Liquid= Condensation
Liquid to Solid= Freezing
Solid to Gas= Sublimation
Liquid to Gas= Evaporation and Vaporization
Gas to Solid= Vaporization
Solid to Liquid= Melting
Physical Property
a quality or condition of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance's composition
Example: hardness/conductivity/ color/ malleability
Mixture
is a physical blend of 2 or more components mixtures can be classified as Heterogeneous and Homogeneous
Heterogeneous
Composition not uniform throughout the mixtures
Example: all different colors/ not the same throughout
Separating Mixtures
Filtration- separating a certain thing with another
Distillation- process of making (gas)
Physical Manipulation- picking out the same color or things
Example: Gold or water
making alcohol, chemical, salt water
Example: checks Mix, salads, pop with ice, rocks
Substance
matter that has a uniform and define composition
Every sample of a given substance has identical intensive properties because every sample has the same composition.
