"How to learn any language in six months" (TEDx, Chris Lonsdale)
Quotations
Information that helps survival has relevance
Information that helps achieve Personal Goals has relevance
Principles
We master tools by using tools
We learn tools fastest when they are relevant
Focus on language content that is relevant to you
Use your new language as a tool to communicqte ... from Day 1
When you first UNDERSTAND the MESSAGE you will unconsciously ACQUIRE the language
Language learning is NOT ABOUT accumulating KNOWLEDGE, in many ways it's about PHYSIOLOGICAL TRAINING
We have filters in our brain, which filter in the sounds that we are familiar with and out the sounds of languages that we're not ("English deaf") --- If you can't hear it, you won't understand it, if you can't understand it, you're not gonna learn it
Speaking takes muscles
You've got 43 muscles in your face, you have to coordinate those in a way that it makes sounds, which other people will understand
When your face hurts you're doing it right
Psycho-physiological STATE matters
If you're upset, sad, angry, irritated, you're not gonna learn anything, If you're happy, relaxed, in an Alpha brain state, curious, you're gonna learn really quickly
You need to be tolerant of ambiguity. If you're one of those people who needs to understand 100 percent, every word you're hearing, you will go nuts, because you'll incredibly upset all the time, you're not perfect. If you're comfortable with getting some, not getting some, just paying attention to what you do understand, you're gonna be fine, relaxed and you'll be learning quickly.
Actions
Listen A LOT - brain soaking
brain soaking - If you put yourself in a context, and you hear tons and tons of a language, and it doesn't matter if you understand it or not. You're listening to the rhythm, to patterns that repeat
Focus on getting the meaning first (before the words)
You should use patterns you already know
Start mixing (if you've got 10 verbs, 10 nouns, 10 adjectives, you can say 1000 different things)
Language is a creative process
Focus on the core (learn high frequency language first, in English 3000 words give 98% "Coverage" in a daily conversation)
Get a language parent (teacher, parent, etc. who would be patient enough - so you get a safe environment for learning)
Copy the face (to make your muscles work right)
Direct connect to Mental Images (don't translate in your first language)
