SKELETAL SYSTEM

Functions: blood formation, nutrient storage, support/protection, movement, mineral homeostasis

Structural components: Axial and Appendicular skeleton. Axial is composed of head/ribcage portion. Appendicular is the remainder of the skeleton.

Compact/Spongy bone characteristics: SPONGY found in interior of skull bones, vertebrae, sternum, pelvis and ends of long bones. Compact is found at outer layer of bones and shafts of long bones. Made up of osteon subunits

Components of long bone: Epiphysis, Diaphysis, Periosteum, Endosteum.

Red and yellow bone marrow: Red bone marrow functions in the production of red blood cells, yellow is mainly for nutrient and fat storage.

Types of bone cells: Osteocytes(bone cell) Osteoclast(destroys bone matrix) and Osteoblasts(produces bone matrix)

CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Endomysium: Surrounds each muscle fiber

Epimysium: encircles all the fascicles to form a complete muscle

Perimysium: Encircles a group of muscle fibers, forming a fascicle.
