Joints
Fibrous joints
1) Sutures: Immovable; joined by short interconnected fibers; only in skull; disappear with age.
2) Syndesmosis: Small movement; joined by dense regular connective tissue; found in distal tibiofibular joint, carpals and tarsals.
3) Gomphosis: between teeth and alveoli; joined by periodontal ligaments; immovable.
Cartilaginous joints
1) Synchondrosis: joined by hyaline cartilage; immovable; found in epiphyseal plate.
2) Symphysis: small movement; found in pubic symphysis and intervertebral joints; composed of fibrocartilage and hyaline cartilage.

Types of Synovial Joints
1) Plane joint- nonaxial gliding movement produced by a flat articular surface; found in intercarpal joints
-
3) Pivot joint - uniaxial movement made by sleeve and axle; rotation; found in proximal radioulnar joint.
4) Condylar joint - biaxial movement made by oval articular surfaces; flexion and extension & abduction and adduction; found in knuckles.
5) Saddle joint - biaxial movement created by a concave & convex articular surfaces; found in thumb joint.
6) Ball-and-socket joint - multiaxial movement made by spherical head inside a socket; flexion, extension, adduction, abduction and rotations; found in shoulder joints
Skeletal Muscle
Functions
1) produce movement of bones, blood and contents of hollow organs
2) open and close passageways (sphincter)
3) maintain posture & stabilize joints
4) generate heat
Properties
1) Contractility - generate tension when pulling an attachment point
2) Excitability - respond to stimulus
3) Extensibility - stretch
4) Elasticity - return to original shape after contraction
