Energy Transfer
Life processes such as respiration occur losing some of the energy from the chain, as heat energy.
At each trophic level, some energy is lost in between it and the previous.
This means that tertiary consumers can only exist in much smaller quantities, there isn't as much energy to sustain them.

In the past animals have been treated with steroids to encourage growth, but this is now banned.
Productivity

-
Pyramid levels of energy have their limitations. They only take a snapshot of an ecosystem at a time.
Primary Productivity
-
Temperatures affect the growth rate, which is why some crops are grown in green houses.
Light levels can limit photosynthesis efficiency. Some crops are planted early to increase the length of the growing season.
Trophic Levels
-
A food chain shows the transfer of energy from one living organism to another, through levels of the food chain, called trophic levels.
