Identifying and Assisting a Struggling Student (Performing above grade…

- - - - Look closely at their performances when they excell, what is different? Why is this subject or area easier for them? Try to find a pattern in their work or simply ask them about the subject and their interest or work in it. Use their answer to try and replicate that enthusiasm and comprehension across the board. :left_speech_bubble:
      - Ensure you provide positive feedback on their good work. Try to create a sense of accomplishment and pride in the areas where they already excel, so they are not disheartened when you begin to tackle areas where they are struggling. :star:
  - - - Reach out to parents and administration to see what the problem is and if your school has the ability to compensate for it or assist in some way, such as allowing the student to use school resources like the internet and a quiet place to study, providing lunches through the reduced meal program, or giving the student access to a counsellor. :computer: :fried_egg: :speech_balloon:
    - - Identify and try to address the new concern. If you are a new teacher and the change is likely the cause, contact a former teacher to see what strategies best work for the student. If the issue is a peer, consider keeping them separate in groups and possibly approaching a counsellor or parent based on the specifics of the problem. :pencil2:
  - - - Speak with parents and if possible the physician to address the specific needs of the child. :telephone_receiver:
      - Research current literature on this particular diagnosis and student success. Try to replicate procedures and systems which are assisting students with similar learning disabilities or special needs. :newspaper:
      - Ensure the school administration is aware and if there is any related allotment of teaching staff, funds, or educational assistance based on the diagnosis, be sure you are adamant about getting these allotments from the administration and the board. :money_with_wings:
    - - Have the student complete a project with the guidance of an educational assistant at the school. Allow the EA to assess the student's performance.
        
        Monitor the student closely in class and be prepared to make assessments on the performance of the student.
        
        Reach out to parents about the student's performance.
        
        Using the feedback from yourself, educational assistants, and the parents, decide upon the next course of action. This may mean bringing the child to a physician for assessment, adjusting the course load for the student, allowing the student to complete different but equitable projects, or not altering the current structure. :unlock:
- - - - Does the student seem uninterested in this particular class or subject? Is it content based, or struggling, or too easy?
      - Try different organization for this class in question, such as group work, online projects, or using more tactile items in class. :
        
        After trying different ways to address and improve the students performance in this area, have a frank review of their work during this trial period. If they continue to apply themselves, and continue to score low, consider bringing in assistance, or allow them to meet the basic requirements in this subject and let more of their time be spent on subjects they enjoy more, feel more confident with, or have interest in. :smiley:
      - Speak to the student about the subject. See if they have any particular complaints or disinterest and try to create a way forward that addresses their feedback.
      - Pair the student up with a student who is excelling in and enjoys this area, see if the collaboration between the two can spark more interest from the student.
    - - Work overall to make this student continue to do well and perhaps move into the excelling group. :book:
      - Provide opportunities for the student to take on a more difficult role or part of an assignment to help encourage growth. Something like a team project with assigned team leaders. :speaking_head_in_silhouette:
      - Speak openly with the student. Ask them about any particular hobbies or interests, then see if that can be applied to a subject in your curriculum. If you can incorporate more personalized content in a specific subject, they may be able to become an excelling student in a particular area. :speech_balloon:
  - - - Continue to work with the student and provide individual attention even though their grades are fine. :smiley:
      - Approach the student to see if there is any content area that is not covered in the current curriculum that they may wish to spend class time working on, potentially opening up a new stream where they can excel rather than simply meet standards. :question:
    - - Allow the student to work more in their area of interest. :+1:
      - Put the student in charge of a small group related to the subject they are interested in, and see if the leadership position helps push them from meeting standards to exceeding standards. :silhouettes:
      - Encourage and validate their hard work in this area, use positive language to create confidence. At the same time, challenge them with more difficult content in this area, or new objectives. Combining positive feedback with more difficult content may make the student determined to continue doing well even as the content gets harder. :star:
