Types of Diseases
fungal disease
rose black spot causes purple or black spots to develop on leaves which turn yellow and fall off
means less photosynthesis can happen so the plant doesn't grow well
spreads through the wind or in water
can be treated by fungicides and by removing affected leaves which are then destroyed so it cant spread
caused by a protist
malaria is caused by protist
mosquitos pick up the malaria protist when they feed on an infected animal
every time the mosquito feeds on another animal it infects it by inserting the protist into the animals blood vessels
it can be fatal and causes repeating episodes of fever
can be reduced by stopping the mosquito from breeding and people can use mosquito nets and insecticides
bacterial diseases
salmonella
salmonella is a type of food poisoning
causes fever, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea
caused by the toxins the bacteria produces
get it from eating food which is contaminated with salmonella bacteria
in the UK most poultry is vaccinated against the disease to control it
gonorrhoea
a sexual transmitted disease
caused by bacteria
causes pain whilst urinating, thick yellow or green discharge from the vagina or penis
was originally treated by penicillin but is harder now as bacteria has become resistant to it
people can be treated by antibiotics and should use barrier methods of contraception
reduced or prevented
being hygienic - prevents the spread of disease e.g. washing hands before preparing food or after sneezing
destroying vectors - by getting rid of the organisms that spread disease e.g. using insecticides or destroying habitat so they cant breed
isolating infected individuals - if they are isolated it prevents them from passing it on
vaccination - this means they cant develop the disease and therefore pass it on
