- Muscle contractions cause the pressure changes inside thorax that force air in and out of the lungs to ventilate them
- pressure conversely with volume of gases
e.g: movement of diaphragm and ribcage, external and internal intercostal muscles

:star: maintains concentration of gradients of oxygen and carbon dioxide between air in alveoli and blood flowing in adjacent capillaries
:red_cross: gas exchange; diffusiom between air in alveoli and blood in capillaries following concentraion gradient
