Data collection
Access
As a SS I find it hard to get access to US administrative data about emigration so that I can analyse the trends
As a PhD or postgraduate, I am spending too much time figuring out who the big names in my field are and where can i find their data
As a geographer and archaeologist, I need access to live sensory data, and it is really hard to find and aggregate it.
It's super hard and slow to pull data from old admin system (student data) so yo can then analyse that data
As a future researcher in social sciences, i want to be able to easily aggregate multiple sources of data
as a social researcher, i find it super hard to look for particular data and statistics, there are too many repositories
-
Skills
Pull different data sources into one set ready for analysis (formats, structures)
as a young researcher starting my phd, can i find suggestions on best current data in my area
as a researcher that is starting in field x, can i find some experiences of people using method y
-
as a young researcher, how do i increase participation in my online survey
as a young researcher, how do I know and ensure that my research methodology and collection is robust
as a social scientist half way through the grant/project, what do I do if the data collection did not produce the expected outcomes
as a social scientist with an EU grant, how do I (or i find it hard to) keep track whether I am complying with the right standards and policies around data collection and management
as a researcher who came up with the hypothesis and methodology, i need some help from someone who can review my data collection process and give me advice
-
collection
As a SS it's hard to get approval from the institutional review board so that I can do research on immigration
as a social science researcher, i want to be able to re-collect approvals to use personal and anonymised data for different purposes than the original intent
as a researcher i want to have access to volunteers outside students that would like to participate in my experiments
as a social scientist just starting a project, i wonder how i can find if someone else worked with a particular group of people in interviews or surveys and what lessons have they learned from that interaction that i can apply to my plan
Management and Storage
As a researcher I want to share the updates I make to the data with my collaborators fast and collaborators should be able to fork on the data
as a social scientist, i don't want to have to deal with the storage and curation of my data after the project finishes and paper is published
Data analysis
Quant
As a SS I finding it hard to work with Social Media data that erodes (info gets deleted in time) so that I can ensure reproducibility of my research
-
It's hard to find people to bounce ideas off so that you can more quickly figure out how to differently approach your data analysis
As a SS it's hard to visualize how these more 'harder science' methods like SNA can be used in Social Science so that I can commit the time to learn and try them
It's hard to figure out what expertise is needed for your quant questions so that you can speak to the right expert
It's hard to explain to someone new my research so that they can provide assistance with my data analysis approach
how do i know whether there are missing variables, and how do i correct for those
Qual
how do i pre-test some qualitative analysis methods/tools before i waste all my time with one that is not appropriate for my research

Tools
As a SS I find it hard to choose analysis tools so that I only invest time in using tools that can do the analysis I need and can work with the datasets that I have
It would be great to have 1 tool/platform for mixed methods data analysis rather than having to use Atlas.ti + Stata + others

As a SS I find it hard to ask colleagues to help with using a certain tool or methodology so that I unblock myself in the analysis I am trying to do
As a PHD it's hard to get a straight answer from your supervisor to progress research. They usually give you breadcrumbs and you just give up.
It's hard to get answers on forums quickly so that you can unblock yourself and progress your data analysis
I am aware there are some automated ways to structure and clean data (i.e. machine learning) from mixed methods data collection but I don't know much about that
Tools like R/Python have vast online support communities which makes them hard to navigate: Which community is the right one for me to engage with?
as a young researcher, how do i figure out how to develop a codebook
as a young researcher, how do I develop a rating for subjective answers to be as robust as possible
