How to Identify and Help a Struggling Kindergartner in Reading
Typical Behaviors of a Struggling Reading Student
Avoid reading out loud
Repeatedly ask why we need to read
Complain they are tired or do not feel well
Will make negative comments towards reading
"Reading is boring"
"I hate reading"
Will avoid looking at words and only focus on the pictures
Will completely guess words based off of pictures
Eyes will jump from picture to picture searching for the answer
Will get upset easily if reading a word incorrectly
Anger
Sadness
Unable to focus on reading assignment
Constant moving around room or in chair
Talk to friends during their or someone else's turn
Eyes will wander room
Repeatedly ask unrelated questions
Act out when it is their turn to read in a group
Be silly to strike laughter
Become overly dramatic or emotional (angrily frustrated, sad, whiney, etc.)
Ways to Help a Struggling Reading Student
Motivation
Allow student to choose book to read
Create a reading log or game that offers a prize when the goal is reached (example: a sticker for every book read)
Discuss how reading helps us and why it is so important
Create new and exciting ways to present the reading material (example: word games, cut and paste from magazines, comic books, favorite animation books, etc.)
Confidence
Praise student for effort NOT correctness
Discuss that it is okay to be challenged and read words incorrectly
Scaffold their reading (begin with basic words/sounds and move up the ladder to more sophisticated words/blends
Model reading without them knowing. (Purposefully pretend that you are struggling to read a word. Stay persistent and see if you can have them encourage you to keep trying)
One On One/ Differentiated Instruction
Set time apart daily to work one on one with the student and their reading skills. Make it fun- not a punishment or something to be embarrassed of. Make one on one time for other students as well.
Assign reading that is level appropriate for their needs
Work in reviews for the class to allow the struggling student to relearn information
Offer different reading tools (books, computer, audio, etc.)
