        Zakat
        
        Zakat is a form of Islamic social financing through which all Muslims whose wealth falls above a certain threshold are required by the Qur’an to give 2.5% of their assets each year to help people in need. Note that, while the proportion a person is required to pay remains the same, there is some variation between Sunni and Shia Islam concerning the payment and use of Zakat.
        
        Zakat-al-Fitr
        
        Giving Zakat-ul-Fitr (also known as Fitrana) is one of the many obligations of the holy month of Ramadan. Like the Zakat on an individual’s savings, it also entails giving a small amount to charity. Zakat-ul-Fitr, however, must be given before the Eid prayers are performed after Ramadan. It is not uncommon to get Zakat-ul-Fitr mixed up with Zakat or vice versa. Both terms sound similar and even by definition have some similarities which often lead to confusion.
        
        Sadaqah
        
        Zakat and Sadaqah have many similarities. For one, both involve giving something that belongs to you, to someone who has a need for it. However, they are a few key differences which we will go over in detail in today’s post.
        
        Kaffarah
        
        If you deliberately miss a fast in Ramadan or break a fast without a legitimate reason, then you are obliged to make up for this by way of Kaffarah, to fast for 60 continuous days per fast missed or broken.
        
        Jizya
        
        Jizyah is what is taken from the People of the Book – and from the mushrikeen, according to some scholars – every year, in return for their being allowed to settle in Muslim lands, and in return for protecting them against those who would commit aggression against them.
        
        Ushr
        
        10% tax on the harvests of irrigated land and 10% tax on harvest from rain-watered land and 5% on Land dependent on well water.[2] The term has also been used for a 10% tax on merchandise imported from states that taxed the Muslims on their products.[6] Caliph `Umar ibn Al-Khattāb was the first Muslim ruler to levy ushr.
        
        Khums
        
        Refers to the historically required religious obligation of any Muslim army to pay one-fifth of the spoils of war, the money collected from non-believers after a military campaign; this tax was paid to the caliph or sultan, representing the state of Islam.
