Colligative Properties (Juan Luis)
Boiling Point Elevation and Freezing Point Depression
Difference between the boiling points of the pure solvent and the solution is proportional to the concentration of the solute particles
The boiling points of solutions are all higher than that of the pure solvent
Vapor Pressure Depression
The vapor pressure of a solvent will always be lower if it is pure, than if it is in a solution.
We calculate it with Raoult's Law
The formula is: P solution= (X solvent) (Po solvent), where Po solvent is the vapor pressure of the pure solvent and X solvent is the mole fraction of the solvent.
Colligative properties
The best way to demonstrate the importance of colligative properties is to examine the consequences of Raoult's law. Raoult found that the vapor pressure of the solvent escaping from a solution is proportional to the mole fraction of the solvent
Osmotic Pressure
Is the pressure difference needed to stop the flow of solvent across a semipermeable membrane.
It is proportional to the molar concentration of the solute particles in solution.
