I believe the main barriers to change and innovation are the fear of failure due to change and superiors not listening to the ideas of regular employees. Once a company is established it is easy for the owner to get comfortable with the routines they have in place that got them to the point they are in now. But after a while these practices may become stale in the eyes of the customer, this will result in them doing business elsewhere to spark their interest. I have seen this numerous of times on some of my favorite shows such as Bar Rescue, and Kitchen Nightmares. Owners refuse to commit to change as they are stuck on what their business did in the past to succeeded. This is where I believe superiors should look to their employees for new ideas. Floor workers spend the most time with the customers and many times they hold great ideas that could spark a trend in the company. So to overcome this barrier to change owners need to be able to swallow their pride, realize their business is failing, and look to their employees for support.
