Renal Evaluation
Function
urine concentration
USG
Adequate USG
Indicates pre-renal disease, as the kidney has the capacity to concentrate urine appropriately
Inadequate USG
Specific gravity is not adequate therefore indicates nephron loss and renal failure if animal isn't effected by something else

Indicators of Disease
-
Creatinine
-
-
-
Is not effected much by diet, however will be lower in animals with less muscle mass

Urinalysis

Specimen collection
-
-
-
If sample cannot be analysed within 2 hours should be stored at 4 degrees and brought to room temperature before analysis
-
Pre,Post-Renal Failure
Pre-Renal
Note: USG can be decreased in pre-renal disease if in conjunction with another disease such as diabetes insipidous
Often fluid therapy can assist in differeitnaiting between pre-renal azotemia and primary renal disease as pre renal disease will improve with therapy
