Deficiency
major effect are red blood cells that are fewer in number and larger in size with lower than normal haemoglobin levels
aetiology
aspirin, antacids and nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs interfere with folate processing
conditions such as sprue, pellagra, leukemia may impair utilisation of folate

first decrease in serum folate concentration
then decrease in erythrocyte
then rise in homocysteine
lastly megaloblastic changes in bone marrow
Sypmtoms
poor growth in children, smooth red swollen tongue, gastrointestinal disturbances, diarrhoea
Symptoms of advanced stage amaemia
weakness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, headache, palpitations, shortness of breathe
Excess

excess has ability to mask pernicious anaemia
therefore, only available as prescription
