Starting this year I was excited to see the incoming grade 6, because I was working with them while they were in grade 5. I know that a few students left us to go to other schools for various reasons and that there would be a great possibility that we could get some new students ourselves. This ends up being the case. There are three new students and each of them are ELL. After a few days two of the three ask for help and I can see them try the best that they can to do the work that they are assigned. I took notice that Jojo, the other new student, would just sit quietly with her head down looking like she was taking notes and doing work. I then came up behind her and saw that she was doodling and not doing any work. I started to ask her if she needed help and I would just get a blank stare from her. I asked another student to help translate for me to see if the language was an issue and it was not, she was just very shy. After about a week the student started to socialize more and feel more comfortable in class. But during class time she she still would fidget and not do any assignments. She would doodle, write in her native language, fiddle with her pencil case, one week she had a "blanky" that she'd carried around, and would just ask the other student for answers. A few teachers and I thought that she was feeling bad about leaving her friends from her old school and that was her way of acting out. But After many times speaking to her we realized that that is just how she is. She does not like PE or any physical activities, does not like to read in English and/or do anything English related and just likes to play with classmates and talk during free time and lunch. She is not disruptive in during class but lack the motivation to do any time of work to get better.
