Consent

based on sufficient and adequate understanding. Gives the opportunity for them to ask questions and discuss information with anyone.

deception
requires participants to not be exposed to an increased risk of harm, explain why deception was necessary, explain real aims and methods, no known reason to think participants would not have consented
can be expressed orally or in writing, based on the nature and complexity of the risk & the cultural background of the participants
3 conditions for consent: free (voluntary participation without coercion), informed (information presented clearly, participants can decline or withdraw), prior (consent to be sought in plenty of time before the study, and this respect is shown to the time required for consultation and consensus processes)
Respect
each human has value, right to consent, withdraw. respect for privacy, confidentiality, cultural sensitivities.
recognizing the value of human autonomy= capacity to determine ones own life and make ones own decisions

Beneficence
assessing and taking into account risks of harm and potential benefits, maximise benefits minimise risks.
risk= potential harm, discomfort or inconvenience (assessing harm likelihood, harm severity, extent of minimizing harm, whether risk can be justified by benefits of he research)
managing risk= must include a mechanism in the design of the research to deal with any harms that may occur, and a process to monitor the mechanism.
