Image, Audio, and Video Formatting for Music Education
File Extensions
Audio
.aif - Developed by Apple, this is the default sound extension on Macs.
.mp3 - MP3 audio files. Very small size, as it is compressed, but CD-like quality! Good for websites.
.mid or .midi- Used for midi playback, often on midi instruments or for midi playback on DAWs such as Garageband. Protip - Export Sibelius file to MIDI, drag and drop MIDI into Garageband for access to a large soudn library and all the sound manipulation a DAW offers.
.wav - early audio file format. Big file size as it is uncompressed, but good quality, better than mp3
.wma - Windows Media Audio. Developed my Microsoft, has same quality as MP3, but faster compression rate. Most programs support this file format.
Video

.avi - Audio Video Interleave. Standard file format used by video files under Microsoft windows. Max size of AVI file is 2GB.

mp4 - MPEG4 video file. Commonly used for Audio books and podcasts, and iPhone ringtones. Can be played on most video players.

.jpeg/.jpg - Joint Photographic Experts Group. Colour image graphics compression format. One of the most popular image times. Abbreviated as .jpg with IBM compatible computers.

.bmp - Bitmap file. Large file size, not usually used or recommended outside Microsoft Windows.
.tiff - Tagged Image File Format. A way to store bitmapped images to be viewed and edited on both IBM compatible and Mac computers.
Converting Files
Windows To convert files on Windows, you can select Export or Save as in the 'Files' setting. Alternatively, you can use 3rd party file converters online or as downloaded software.
Mac There are a variety of ways fo convert file types on Macintosh, explored here
Video - Use VLC player or Handbrake to convert files into .mp4 or .mov files. Handbrake can also rip video from a DVD.

Apple Products
Classroom - Can lock devices (iPads, Macs, laptops), and see what students are doing! Keeps students on task.
Keynote - Apple equivalent of Powerpoint, but with greater interactivity!
iBooks Author - Create iBooks that are aesthetically pleasing and practical! Intuitive to use, you can incorporate videos, quizzes, animations from Keynote, interactive images that open to a light box, scrolling sidebars, etc. These iBooks can be exported to pdf, but will lose the interactivity in the exporting process. Example - James Humberstones' "The Speaking PIano" Musica Viva has iBooks too
Screen Recording
ScreenFlow - For Mac. Easy to use video editing, screen recording and sharing tool. Great for making tutorials!
Quicktime - On Mac. Quicktime has a screen recording ability! Tutorial Here
iPhons and iPads have an in-built screen recording feature. Tutorial Here
OBS Studio- Lets you screen recording video and audio on PCs. You can use multiple sources, mix between them and make one seamless video. You can also live stream and mix at the same time - useful for Live Online Tutorials
Widget Makers
Bookry.com - Huge library of widgets to use on websites and iBooks. You can also create your own HTML5 widgets.
Website Makers
Hype - Html5 is no longer scary with this intuitive 'make your own website without templates. Websites can be saved to Dropbox, or linked to/embedded in Wordpress.
wix.com - Free, intuitive, with a wide range of templates and widgets in-built. Aesthetically pleasing and practical websites are easy to make, and take away most of the workload, letting you input the content you want.
weebly.com - Another free website maker, similar to Wix. With many free templates, you simply drag and drop to customise the layout of your site.
Google Web Designer - Create engaging, interactive HTML5-based designs and motion graphics that can run on any device.

Resource Wonderland
State LIbrary of NSW - Loads of resources that are publicly available on a wide variety of subjects.
Poster Makers
Canva - With a wide variety of templates, Canva makes poster making easy and aesthetically pleasing. The posters can then be exported as pdfs.
Glogster - Interactive Multimedia Posters. These are great for showcasing student work using videos, or collating the main points of an iBook in an interactive wall. These can be exported as pdfs, however they will lose their interactive features.
