Environmental conditions may dictate the best leadership style to encourage participation and effort.

Certain behaviour is expected by group members from their leader depending on the situation

The personality, experience and ability of leader will influence if a person participates or not

Effective leadership is related to the leaders personality

Leaders will behave in manners that are linked to their personality

Certain groups require certain leadership styles/ personalities in order to motivate them

Effective leadership is related to the nature and motivation of the groups members

Member Characteristics

Required Behaviour

The style of leadership that is most suited to motivate the group based on their member characteristics and the characteristics of the situation

Preferred Behaviour

The style of leadership that is expected and wanted by group members

Leading in the style that a group wants wins them over and will motivate people to participate and put in high levels of effort

Actual Behaviour

It should also be modified if situational characteristics change

The can be modified to meet the changing needs of a group based on their performance and satisfaction

The style of leadership that is actually used

If this is well matched to the other elements of the model then the group is more likely to be motivated

Consequences

The performance is the outcome of the leadership

The consequences will often be good when situational demands are met by the leader

The consequences will often be good when the needs of the group are matched by the leaders behaviour/style

When consequences are good that means performance is of a high standard there are high levels of enjoyment and the group perceive themselves to have done well

High levels of performance, satisfaction and enjoyment lead to increased participation and increased motivation

Satisfied and successful performers will value their leader and see them as a role model
