Classes of Nutrients
Fats and oils
Fatty acids and glycerol - cream, veg oil, animal fat.
-
-
Carbs
disaccharides - two units of mono, first converted into mono then absorbed. sucrose, maltose, lactose.
Poly - n units of mono, req digestion for absorption. glycogen, starch, cellulose.
monosaccharides - simple sugars, no need for digestion. glucose, fructose and galactose.
Minerals - growth, repair, regulation of osmotic pressure. Na, K, Ca, Mg etc.
Vitamins - naturally occurring, in minute amt. cant be synthesized.
Water - req for transportation, regulation of body temperature
In animals - steps
absorption - digestion food passes thru intestine, carried out by diffusion.
-
-
assimilation - utilization of food by cells, for growth, repair and energy.
-
Modes of nutrition
Hetero
Saphro - dead decaying matter, as fluid. by fungi and bacteria.
-
parasitic
Parasitic - nutrition from host, harmful to host, plasmodium, ascaris etc
Autotrophs
Photo - photosynthesis - Co2, water and sunlight, by chloroplast
Chemo - chemicals to manufacture food, chemosynthesis
-
symbiotic
organisms live in association, lichen.
Nutrition in plants- by photosynthesis - using raw material , food as starch
-
Mechanism
Light reaction
light energy absorbed as photons. chlorophyll molecule excited, emits electron.
electron travels thru electron transports chain, process is mediated by electron acceptors
Inorganic phosphate and ADP into ATP, used as a source during dark reaction
