Terrestrial Biomes
Tundra
Location: It is located at the top of the globe, near the north pole.
Avg. Temp: Winter: -30°F, Summer: 37-54°F
-
-
Soil: Most of the soil in the Tundra is unable to support plants, as it is completely frozen over (permafrost)
-
Top Consumer: Arctic Foxes, Wolves, Snowy Owls, Polar Bears and Brown Bears
-
Boreal Forest
-
-
-
-
Soil: The soil isn’t the highest quality and may sometimes even completely freeze over during the winter
-
-
-
Temperate Rainforest
-
-
-
-
Soil: The soil is typically dark and quite damp. It is also much richer than that of a tropical rainforest.
Primary Producer: Coniferous trees, tall douglas firs
Top Consumers: Bears, cougars, bobcats
-
-
Temperate Grasslands
Location: Africa, the pampas of South America, the steppes of Eurasia, and the plains of North America
-
-
-
-
-
Top consumer: wolves, coyotes, swift foxes, badgers
-
Savanna
-
-
-
-
Soil: Varies depending on the type of bedrock, but typically not very nutritious
-
Top Consumer: lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas
-
Tropical Rain Forest
-
-
-
-
Soil: The nutrition levels of the soil is typically very poor, as the large amount of rain and plants removes nutrients from the soil.
Primary Producer: Canopy trees, fungi
-
-
Aquatic Biomes
-
-
Freshwater wetland
-
Location/Depth: They are located on rivers/streams along the side of rivers and streams that do not lead to an ocean. They are also typically not deeper than 6 meters
-
Avg. Temp: In a temperate zone, the typical temperature could be around 52 degrees Fahrenheit
-
-
Estuary
-
Location/Depth: Located anywhere where rising sea levels have flooded river valleys. They are also typically not deeper than 100 feet
-
Primary Producer: Algae, seaweed, marshgrasses
-
-
Littoral Zone
-
Location/Depth: They are located in the part of a lake that is very close to the shore and is between 16-33 feet deep
-
-
-
-
Profundal Zone
-
Location Depth: This is the deeper zone of the lake, that is much colder and denser. It can have a depth of up to 1,949 feet
-
-
-
-
Limnetic Zone
-
Location/Depth: This zone is located deeper in the middle of the Littoral and Profundal zone. It is also shallow enough that sunlight can still penetrate
-
-
-
Special Features: This zone produces the most food and oxygen to support the consumers living in the lake
