Unit 3. The Verb “to be” Simple Present Tense
We use the simple present tense when an action is happening right now, or when it happens regularly
Verb To Be in simple present tense
Examples:
He is a teacher.
She is helpfull.
I am happy.
You are a Japanese.
It is a big dog.
We are intelligent
They are married.
Affirmative Staments
An affirmative statement states that something is true. In an affirmative statement,
the verb follows the subject.
Examples:
He is twenty years old.
I am from New Zealand.
You are students.
Negative Statements
Negative statements are formed by adding the word not after the verb in the Simple
Present of the verb to be
Examples: 1- I am not from Spain.
2- You are not an Australian.
3- It is not a small cat.
Negative Contractions
There are two ways of forming contractions of To Be in negative sentences. One is with a contraction of the subject and the verb (e.g. I am = I'm) OR a contraction of the verb and not (e.g. are not = aren't)
I am not a singer OR I'm not a singer.
You're not Australian. OR You aren't Australian.
He's not thirty years old. OR He isn't thirty years old.
She's not a secretary. OR She isn't a secretary.
It's not a small cat. OR It isn't a small cat.
You're not teachers. OR You aren't teachers.
They're not single. OR They aren't single.
Questions
To create questions with To Be, you put the Verb before the Subject. (VERB be + NOUN + PREDICATE)
Examples:
1-Is she a secretary?.
2-Are they single?.
3-Is he thirty years old?.
Short and Long Answers
Yes, I am. - Peter is in the school.-
