watchmen:
watchmen were paid by local authorities. They were only used in large cities and towns.
there jobs
these included patrolling the streets at day time,
standing and watching over certain buildings to deter thieves,
arresting drunks and vagabonds
constables:
constables were paid by local authorities
they were only used up till 1856 when they got removed the police act.
law enforcment
bow street runners:
the bow street runners were set up in 1749 by Henry fielding they only operated around the magistrates court bow street and were paid by the government.
there roles were to
arrest criminals in central london,
patrol london streets in the evening,
investigate crimes that happened in london.#

there were only 6 of them,
they were badly paid and were easily bribed.
bow street horse patrols:
the bow street horse patrols were set up in 1754 by john fielding (Henry fielding's brother) they operated on the outskirts of london to stop highway robbery. by 1805 there were a total of 54 making them more successful then the bow street runners.
police force
metropolitan police:
the metropolitan police was set up in 1829 by sir robert peel and were the first proper police force. they were much better paid and equipped than the bow street runners but still only operated in london. there main role was to deter crime and this led other british cities to set up police forces
detective department:
it is another part of the MP and were set up in 1842 they were set up to solve crimes not deter them.
police act:
this was a law passed in 1856 it forced all local police forces to have a police force just like the metropolitan police.
crime investigation department:
it was set up in 1878 to replace the detective department(1842). it is better known as Scotland Yard they were crime solvers not crime preventers.

transportation to America:
People were getting transported to America up until 1776 when they had there war of independence. It was a way we got rid of prisoners.
transportation to Australia:
People were getting transported to australia from 1787 up till 1868 when transportation was abolished.over all the years over 160,000 people were sent there.
executions
public:
public executions were used up till 1868 when the death penalty was abolished. they would execute people in public as a deterrence all though this did not work as pickpockets would steal in these big crowds. In this time period the only method of execution was hanging as beheading had been stopped
in prison:
by 1868 prisons were being used to house prisoners and now they were also being used to hang serious offenders like murder and treason which would happen inside the prison walls were no one could see them.
