Compare and contrast
Pros:
Multi-factorial initiatives that span many divisions allowing for expertise from all areas of healthcare in order to optimize results
Apparent strong mutual commitment from the university, allowing students and the organization to benefit from innovative ideas from young leaders
System in place to ensure that projects get seen through to the end, including assistance for patent submission and consultative services for quality oversight
-
Pros:
Smaller unit enables agility with innovation and a quick feedback loop in order to assess impact on the organization
Strong metrics already being collected on the organizational level means built in ability to assess impact of innovation
Since it's a small unit, staff work closely and talk frequently which enables organic think-tank-like conversation
Cons:
Potentially too structured, leaving less room for organic innovation and creating too many hurdles
No published information on metrics utilized for measuring impact of innovation on the organization. How do they know it's worth it?
Cons:
Very little support from management regarding the implementation of innovative ideas - in order to foster an idea, it has to be done outside of work hours until it is successful before it's adopted by management

I consider UofU a powerhouse when it comes to innovation withing medical universities - Ohio State University, with the right leadership and resources has the potential to grow the same thriving culture. As highlighted above, we already have many of the components that will work in our favor as we continue to grow a culture of innovation on campus. However, in order to truly make an impact, I believe we should look to UofU as a model; their innovation model has the following that OSU would benefit from:
A physical "center" that serves as the hub of all things innovation for both the heath system and the university
Strong relationships with the university in order to harness the passion and resources from the next generation of innovators (the students)
Strong financial support from alumni that are invested in the innovative process without strong prerogatives
A true culture of innovation that enables everyone, from the president/CEO all the way down to the housecleaning staff, to share ideas and feel that their innovative thinking is valued
The University of Utah has managed to develop a thriving culture of innovation. They have focused on growing a diverse and multi-factorial list of initiatives to promote innovation and to ensure that innovation is successfully integrated. They have gone to great extents to ensure good ideas come to fruition, including obtaining ISO 13485 Certification making them the first Academic institution in the United States, if not the world, to receive this designation.
