Biomolecules
Proteins → A biologically functional molecule made up of one or more polypeptides folded and coiled into a specific three dimensional structure
-
-
-
Four Structures: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Quaternary
Tertiary → The overall shape of a polypeptide resulting from interactions between the side chains R groups of the various amino acids
-
Secondary
Repeatedly Coiled and folded polypeptide chains that result hydrogen bonds between the polypeptide backbone
-
-
Type of structure is alpha helix → a delicate coil held together by hydrogen bonding between every fourth amino acid
Type of Structure is Beta Sheet → two or more segments of the polypeptide chain lying side by side are connected by hydrogen bonds between the the two parallel segments of the polypeptide backbone
-
Quaternary → The overall protein structure that results from the aggregation of these polypeptide subunits
-
Nucleic Acids
-
Ribonucleic Acid (RNA)
A type of nucleic acid consisting of a polynucleotide made of nucelotide monomers with a ribose sugar and the nitrogenous bases
Same bases as DNA, however add Uracil (U) and subtract Thymine (T)
-
-
Gene Expression → The process by which information is encoded in DNA directs the synthesis of proteins or in some cases RNAs that are not translated into proteins instead functions as RNAs
-
-
Lipids → Hydrophobic
-
Phospholipids → Two fatty acids attached to a glycerol, the third hydroxyl group bonds with a phosphate group causing a negative charge
