Cells
Organelles
-
Golgi Apparatus
Stack of smooth membrane sacs, packages, modifies, and separates proteins for secretion of cell, inclusion of lysosomes, and incorporation into plasma membrane
-
Lysosomes
Membrane sacs that contain digestive enzymes (acid hydrolases), site of intracellular digestion
Ribosomes
Dense particles in the cell, site of protein synthesis
Peroxisomes
Membrane sacs of oxidase enzymes, detoxify toxic substances, break down hydrogen peroxide
Nucleus
Control center of the cell (studded with pores on nuclear envelope), contains nucleolus, and contains DNA (as chromosomes of chromatin)
-
Microfilaments
Fine filaments of actin, act for intracellular movement, muscle movement, and part of cytoskeleton
Microtubules
Forms cylindrical structures of tubulin that support the cell and give shape, for intracellular and extracellular movement, forms centrioles
Mitochondria
Produces energy/ATP, powerhouse of cell, a bacteria-shaped double membrane structure (inner folds called cristae)
-
Major Components of Cell
Nucleus
Control center of the cell (studded with pores on nuclear envelope), contains nucleolus, and contains DNA (as chromosomes of chromatin)
Cytoplasm
Cytosol
Fluid, jelly-like substance of cytoplasm that suspends organelles
-
-
Plasma Membrane
Phospholipid bilayer represented by the fluid mosaic model of the cell. Contains attached, inner peripheral and integral proteins.
Active Transport
Transport of substance through an integral protein against its concentration gradient, requires ATP, away from equilibrium
Facilitated Diffusion
Transport of charged, ionic, or larger substance through an integral protein down concentration gradient (to equilibrium)
Simple Diffusion
Diffusion of small, lipid soluble, or uncharged particle through the plasma membrane down concentration gradient (to equilibrium)
