What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a natural system made up of plants, animals and their physical environment.
Ecosystems can be divided into two components: biotic and abiotic. If something is a biotic component of an ecosystem that means it is living e.g. animals, plants, micro-organisms. If something is an abiotic component of an ecosystem, that means it is non-living e.g. rocks, soil and the climate.
The main inputs in an ecosystem are the Sun and the rain, as these provide the conditions under which the ecosystem can exist. Every part of the ecosystem relies on light from the Sun and rain from the atmosphere.

The Nutrient Cycle
All plants and animals depend on nutrients for their health. Nutrients are found in many parts of the environment including in soil, plants and animals.
Nutrients are continuously recycled and transferred through the nutrient cycle. The nutrient cycle shows the cycle of an ecosystem and is proof of the interdependence of all of the components of an ecosystem.
