Cells
Organelles:
-
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum: Membranous system of sacs and tubules externally studded with ribosomes. Makes proteins and cells membrane.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum: Tubules arranged in branching network. Site of lipid metabolism, drug detoxification, and it stores calcium ions.
Golgi Complex: Stack of smooth membranous sacs close to ER. Receives, sorts, and repackages proteins into secretary vesicles such as lysosomes.
Lysosomes: Membranous sacs containing enzymes. Functions as intracellular digestion; the break down of biological cell parts.
-
-
Microfilaments: Fine filament strands of contractile proteins called actin which are involved in muscles contraction and other types of intercellular movement.
Intermediate filaments: Made up of protein fibers that resist pulling forces. Also link to adjacent cells via desmosomes.
Microtubules: Structure made up of tubulin proteins that radiate from the central part of cell. These structures support and give cell shape and is also involved in intracellular movement.
