The Crucible Characters
ACT I
John Proctor: He is very hunky. He hates hypocrites but he himself feels hypocritical because of his affair with Abigail. He feels very guilty. He is married to Elizabeth. He doest not go to church because of his dislike for Reverend Parris and he has to work on the crops for his family. At the end of Act IV, Proctor hangs because "he has his goodness now."

Tituba: She is Reverend Parris's slave from Barbados. She has confessed to witchcraft and is now accusing others in the town. She truly does love Betty and cares for the girls.
Abigail: She is 17 years old and an orphan. She is the niece of Reverend Parris. She beautiful, but lies often and is very manipulative. She a bad reputation in Salem because of her suspected affair with John Proctor. She is the leader of all the girls who were caught dancing in the woods. In Act IV, she steals all of Paris' savings and runs away with Mercy Lewis on a boat.
Thomas Putnam: He is not well-liked in the town. Has lost 7 children. Father of Ruth, who is "bewitched" like Betty, and husband of Goody Putnam. He has a lot of money, but not much power. He has a severe case of land lust and will do anything to obtain more land.
Betty: She is 10 years old and the daughter of Reverend Parris. Her mother has passed away. At the beginning of Act I, she is "bewitched" and one of the girls caught dancing in the woods. She seems to follow Abigail.
Goody Putnam: She is the wife of Thomas Putnam. She has lost seven children in childbirth. She believes there is witches in Salem and that is the cause of loss of her babies.
Reverend Parris: Reverend of Salem. He cares only about his reputation and power. He is the father of Betty. He is disliked by many in Salem (there is said to be a faction against him.) His niece, Abigail lives with him and Betty. In Act IV, he is afraid of revolt and receives threats from the community.
John Hale: an "expert" in witchcraft even though he's only solved one case. Young reverend trying to make his mark. His books are "weighted with authority." In Act III he quits the court. In Act IV he returns to convince the accused to confess because he feels responsible.

Mary Warren: the new servant to the Proctors. She took Abby's after she was fired by Elizabeth. Also dancing in the woods. Timid. We are getting the "follower" vibes. In Act III she accuses Proctor of witchcraft.
Francis Nurse: old man in the town. Lots of money and influence and land. People want to take his land. Married to Rebecca Nurse and have a lot of children and grandchildren.
Rebecca Nurse: old woman, respected in the town. She believes the children are "sporting." She was the midwife who delivered the Putnam's seven stillborns. She is accused of murder. Rebecca hangs with John at sunrise at the end of Act IV.
Giles Corey: old funny guy in the town. Known as a "brave" and "great man." He has accused his wife of "reading." He is pressed to death by stones because he stays silent so his children can have his land.
Ruth Putnam: in bed, "sick" like Betty. Her mother sent her to the woods to talk with Tituba about her dead siblings. We never saw her but she was spoken about throughout the act.
Elizabeth: Proctor's wife. Christian and cold. She is reserved and seems to be a rule follower. She knows about Proctor and Abby's affair. She cares deeply about her three sons. She is accused and jailed for witchcraft. Shes pregnant. She lies for the first time to protect John. At the end of Act IV, she forgives John and admits to being a part of their martial problems.

Danforth: Deputy Gov. who put 400 in jail and 70 have hanged for witchcraft before he arrives in Salem.
