The Death of Beowulf
The messenger tells the people that Beowulf has been destroyed by the dragon, but has managed to kill it before he died.
So Wiglaf darted down the dark passage into the heart of the barrow and brought out dishes and helmets and other treasure, as much as he could carry, to show his lord. Beowulf spoke. The old man was full of pain: 'I thank God that I can give my people these gifts of gold. - These are beowulf's last words
Wiglaf scolds the followers of Beowulf because they abandoned him in his time of need. They are denied any of the treasure because they were cowards.
Mourning Beowulf
To honor Beowulf, the Geats constructed a large tower. The tower is a form of irony because Beowulf's last wish was that the dragon's treasure go to the people, but, instead, the Geats buried Beowulf in the tower with the dragon's gold.
They had a ceremony celebrating, remembering and respecting their fallen noble king
His people rode away crying with the fact that there will be no greater king to ever be. He was the best king they ever had.
