enzymes

specific

active site

the active site is the part where an enzyme and its substrate meets

enzymes are specific to their substrate because each have their own job

image

enzymes are proteins

found in all living cells

enzymes speed up chemical reactions

they do not get used up

without them we would die because it would take too long for reactions to happen

types of reactions

fats ----------> fatty acids

proteins ---------> amino acids

carbohydrates ----------> sugar

pepsin

amylase

lipase

experiments

liver, onion and carrot when added to hydrogen peroxide will foam. this shows there was a chemical reaction due to there being an enzyme called catalse.

hydrogen peroxide is a waste product our bodies produce and is toxic so an enzyme brakes it down quickly to get rid of it.
