SamanthaPerez Cells
Organelles
- Ribosomes: Dense particles, free or attached to Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, site of protein synthesis
- Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): has ribosomes, makes proteins and membranes
- Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum: no ribosomes, site of lipid and steroid hormone synthesis, detoxifies drugs.
- Golgi Apparatus: close to the ER, recives proteins from ER, sorts and modifes them and repackages for 1. export 2. Plasma Membrane growth 3. Creation of Lysosomes
- Lysosomes: filled with enzymes that breakdown biological material.
- Mitochondria: Rod like double membrane structure, where we get ATP "Power House"
Endocytosis
- Vesicles form and take in whatever is outside of cell
- Pinocytosis: cell drinking, non selective.
- Receptor mediated: selective, substance binds with protein.
- Phangocytosis: eating cell, Phagocytes that engulf an entire cell/ cell debris, or a pathogen
Membrane Transport
- Simple Diffusion: Moving down a concentration gradient. no cell energy required
- Examples: Small uncharged particles, O2, CO2, H2O(osmosis), small lipid soluble particles
- Facilitated Diffusion: Moving down a concentration gradient, no cell energy required
- Example: Large Particles, charged Particles (ions), not soluble in lipids.
- Active Transport: moving against a concentration gradient, cell energy is required, form of ATP.
- Examples: Variety of substances.
Plasma Membrane
- Barrier for the cell and involved in transport of substances into/out of the cell.
- one of the three major components of a cell
Cytoplasm
- Inside the plasma membrane outside the nucleus
- Place where most activities occur
- one of the three major components of a cell.
Nucleus
- Control Center, place of genetic information/ material (DNA)
- One of the three major components of a cell.
Exocytosis
- Vesicles form inside cell and travel to the proteins in the plasma membrane and twist open the vesicle providing a passage way for substances to leave the cell.
