      - says that their lives are difficult, full of hardship and that they live in slavery because of way Farmer Jones treats them
      - old major: "all men are enemies. all animals are equal" and one day there will be rebellion
      - old major: teaches song, beasts of england
        
        about animals overthrowing man and being free
    - - old major dies three nights later and 3 pigs, snowball, napoleon and squealer take old major's teaching and turn it into way of thinking called 'animalism'
    - - started when Mr Jones forgot to feed animals and fed-up cow pushed her way into store shed to look for food and rest of animals went in too
      - jones and his men try to get animals becak in line but animals chase them off farm--belongs to them now
      - animals rejoice in victory
      - change name to animal farm and decide on 7 commandments to live by that focus on animal equality and avoiding behaving like Jones
    - - animals are happy, work well together and more efficiently than Mr Jones ever did
      - boxer always made huge effort, motto: I will work harder
      - pigs begin to teach others to read and write
      - hinted though that napoleon steals some milk for himself on first day of harvest
    - - sb and nap often argue during meetings
      - sb set up 'committees" focused on education, reading and writing
        
        reduced animalism to 1 idea for simpler animals
        
        "4 legs good, 2 legs bad" and sheep regularly chant it
      - napoleon thinks educating old animals is waste of time, focuses on youngsters, in particular a litter of 9 puppies that he takes away from mother to educate them himself
    - - pigs start taking any extra apples and milk for themselves, some animals complain but squealer persuades them that if pigs dont get extra food they need, Jones might return-------make animals agree with him. inequality beteeen pigs and others start here
    - - Jones and his men try to retake farm but animals fight against invasion
      - fight become known as battle of cowshed. awards given for bravery to sb and boxer
    - - sb suggests building windmill
        
        but nap thinks they should spend time building up food stores instead
      - as animals fo this, nap calls out dogs into barn and chase sb away
    - - supplies and food run short and pigs start trading with humans
      - move to farmhosue, sleep in beds, get up hour later than other animals
      - incident occurs with some hens who protest against unfair treatment and refuse to hand eggs over
        
        nap stops food and nine of them die as result
        
        after this, nap holds show trials where any animals spoken against him has to publically confess their "crimes" and then killed
    - - animals finish windmill for second time, but with longer working hours and less food
      - another attempted invasion by men and windmill is blown up
      - pigs break another commandment by drinking alcohol to celebrate victory of invasion
      - farm proclaimed to be republic and president is elected but there was only one candidate to vote for, nAP
    - - boxer falls whilst re-building windmill
      - pigs claim that they will look after him but sell him to horse slaughter
      - squealer lies to other animals, telling them that nap ensured that boxer got best treatment possible
      - pigs use money from sale of boxer to buy whisky
    - - pigs grow fatter whilst other animals work harder and are given less food
      - cant rmb if they were better off or worse off under rule of Mr Jones
      - pigs learn to walk on 2 legs and have adopted all of Mr Jones' bad habits that Old major told them to avoid
      - invite humans they once fought against farm
      - nap declares that farm would be called 'manor farm' again, animals watching meeting cannot tel diff between humans and pigs
