Suicide Rates
Although suicide accounts for less than 5 percent of all deaths, it is alarming for three reasons.
-
Language
Native Americans speak many languages. One of them is the Aleut.
-
There are two different Aleut languages. There is the Western Aleut language and there is the Eastern Aleut language.
Aleut is spoken by Aleutians who are the people that inhabit the Aleutian Islands and southwestern Alaska.

Poverty
- In 2011, about one in four American Indians and Alaska Natives (26.4 percent) lived in poverty.
- In 2000, Native Americans’ median wealth was equal to only 8.7 percent of the median wealth among all Americans (Chang 2010, 14).
- For most Americans, a home is a key source of wealth. Native Americans, however, have a significantly lower homeownership rate than whites.
Jobs
Even when Native Americans are similar to whites in terms of factors such as age, sex, education level, marital status, and state of residence, their odds of being employed are 31 percent lower than those of whites.
Obama and the Native Alaskans Link TitleThe past president of the United States Barack Obama had a big role in the development of native Americans lives. Obama supported them in many different aspects such as:
- Education: in December 2011 Obama signed an executive order initiating American Indian and Alaska Native Education to help expand educational opportunities and improve outcomes for these communities
- In 2010, the Administration reached a $760 million settlement with Native American farmers and ranchers in the Keepseagle case, which alleged discrimination by the Department of Agriculture (USDA) in loan programs.
- The President fought to continue the payroll tax cut into 2012, ensuring that taxes do not go up on nearly 1.5 million American Indian and Alaska Native workers.
