- - - - Biological - the incidence of AN is greater in female patients and genetic studies have shown an association between mood and eating disorders.
      - Psychological - Those with AN are often struggling with their sense of identity and control therefore, they will often be perfectionists, high achieving, successful and popular with a low self esteem with struggles to express negative emotions.
      - Familial - Family patterns may include over-protectiveness, lack of conflict resolution and an inability to tolerate strong negative emotions. However, a lack of understanding is had to whether these patterns precede its onset or occur in response to it.
      - Social - There is huge cultural pressure on women to be skinny and this is considered an important predisposing factor in its development. AN is commonly seen within Western cultures as a result of this pressure. Those with AN will often come from backgrounds where weight, shape and eating concerns are promoted.
